Gravitational anomalies
The Zone's invisible hand, dragging everything it touches into a silent, hungry vortex.
Gravitational anomalies are a recurring class of environmental hazard in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game series, first introduced in Shadow of Chernobyl (2007) and carried forward through Call of Pripyat (2009) and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl (2024). They manifest as localized distortions in the Zone's physics that pull objects, debris, and stalkers toward a fixed central point, making them one of the most immediately lethal and visually distinctive anomaly types a stalker will encounter.
Unlike radiation pockets or electromagnetic fields, gravitational anomalies interact directly with mass and momentum. A stalker caught in the pull radius will be dragged toward the core with increasing force, and close contact can be fatal. They also serve as a crude but effective improvised weapon: objects fed into the vortex are flung outward at high velocity, a trick experienced stalkers exploit in combat.

Lore & Background
In the in-game fiction, the Zone's anomalies are residual effects of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster compounded by decades of uncontrolled mutation. Gravitational anomalies are among the more 'mechanical' of these phenomena: a localized collapse in the local gravitational field that creates a point of intense attraction. Stalkers in the communities around the Exclusion Zone describe them as 'the Zone breathing in,' and the sight of a full-grown boulder slowly lifting off the ground and spiraling into a dark point in the air is one of the most frequently cited first encounters for newcomers.
The anomalies are not static. Stalkers report that their pull radius can shift over the course of a day, and that certain weather conditions seem to intensify the effect. In Heart of Chornobyl the anomalies are further tied to the Zone's broader ecosystem, interacting with other anomaly types and with the Zone's own 'mood' as it reacts to the stalker's presence. The Monolith cult, who worship the Zone as a living entity, have been known to avoid gravitational clusters, claiming the pull 'unmakes the soul' before it unmakes the body.
Practically, gravitational anomalies make the Zone a three-dimensional hazard map. A stalker who ignores the gravimeter's warning and walks into a dense field of gravitational vortices will find their weapons, grenades, and even their own bodyweight working against them. The Zone does not discriminate between a stalker, a mutant, or a stray bullet; anything with mass is a candidate for the pull.
In Their Own Story
The dust was the first warning. It swirled in a slow, lazy spiral around a point on the cracked asphalt, three metres ahead. Vitya slowed his boots to a stop and let his gravimeter needle settle. It was trembling, pointing at the vortex like a compass finding north.
He crouched, feeling the first tug at his jacket hem — a gentle, insistent pull, as if an invisible hand were tugging him forward. A rusted bolt the size of his thumb was orbiting the dark centre, catching the grey afternoon light. Then a larger stone, then a shard of concrete. The vortex was feeding.
Vitya did not run. You never ran at a gravitational; the panic made you stumble, and stumbling put you inside the radius. He sidestepped, three slow steps to the left, keeping the pull at a diagonal. His M4 hung heavy on his shoulder, the sling tugging him a few centimetres toward the centre. He let it.
On the far side of the anomaly, a Freedom stalker was already waiting, chewing a cigarette. 'You see that one?' she said, nodding at the vortex. 'Killed a Monolith last week. Pulled him in by the boots. He dangled there for a minute, kicking.' She spat. 'The Zone doesn't even let him bleed out properly. Just… keeps him.'
Vitya checked his gravimeter again. The needle was quiet. He walked on, leaving the slow spiral and its orbiting debris to the grey silence of the Zone.
Reader's Guide
Gravitational anomalies appear as a visible vortex of distorted air, with rocks, scrap, and debris spiraling inward toward a fixed focal point. The pull radius is the core danger: a stalker who drifts too close is dragged toward the center with increasing force, and contact with the core can be instantly lethal. Weapons, grenades, and loose gear can be yanked from your belt mid-stride.
The visual tell is consistent across the mainline titles — a slow swirl of dust and small objects orbiting a dark point. In Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat the effect is a straightforward radial pull that scales with proximity. In Heart of Chornobyl the interaction deepens: the vortex can fling heavier objects outward as improvised projectiles once they pass through the core.
No faction "owns" a gravitational anomaly; they are environmental hazards present across the Zone. Duty and Freedom outposts often mark known clusters on their maps, and Monolith patrols sometimes avoid them because the pull disrupts tight formations.
Survival strategy: carry a gravimeter and watch for needle deflection before the vortex is visible to the eye. Approach from the side, never head-on, and maintain clearance from the pull radius. In dense anomaly fields, sprint in short bursts perpendicular to the pull vector. Throwing a rock or grenade into the core works as an improvised weapon, but the flung object can injure the thrower at close range.
Did You Know?
- In Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat, a stalker can deliberately throw a grenade into a gravitational anomaly's core to create a high-velocity projectile, effectively turning the hazard into a ranged weapon.
- The gravimeter, a handheld detection device, is the primary tool for spotting gravitational anomalies before they become visible, with the needle deflecting as the stalker enters the pull radius.
- Gravitational anomalies in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl interact with the Zone's broader anomaly ecosystem, meaning their behaviour can shift depending on nearby anomaly types and the Zone's overall state.
- The visual signature of a gravitational anomaly — a slow, hypnotic swirl of dust and debris orbiting a dark focal point — is one of the most instantly recognizable environmental effects in the entire S.T.A.L.K.E.R. serie
